I know we probably don't mail a Christmas letter to everyone, so here is this year's.  It will probably be easier to read the closer you are to high school poetry units.

The Bickerstaffs

With all due apologies to Edgar Allan Poe.

Once upon a Christmas season, sitting, typing, with one reason,

Finishing the Christmas letter, mailing time is very near.

It is now the cold December, and I sit and must remember

what each sep'rate family member did throughout this recent year.

Sit and write about what each one of us did this recent year.

Read on if you want to hear.

I am still at Central teaching freshman students sometimes reaching

up to pull my hair out when they cannot use apostrophes.

Springtime coaching softball again, coached eight games and managed five wins

Although fun it mostly has been through with coaching I will be.

Want to spend more time with my girls Annie Joan and Natalie

Want to just be their daddy.

Amy took a job at Central helping with a student when he'll

work which isn't often but she thinks it's okay on most days.

Took a class on our computer after bedtime's when she viewed her

lessons and managed to do ter-rific work and get straight A's.

Doesn't miss being in college but still manages straight A's.

Class was over on Wednesday.

Natalie is still a smartie had a nice sixth birthday party

then in September she started her school year in the first grade.

Reading books like Magic Tree House, Stuart Little about a mouse,

Reads 'em all to me and my spouse, soccer this fall she has played.

Loves her school, her teacher and friends, and in Brownies she has stayed.

Now for chores she's being paid.

Annie goes to preschool again, one more year to kindergarten

Loves to spend her free time with her grammie who takes care of her.

Dressing up in princess costumes, col'ring pictures in her bedroom,

Charming people the bulk of whom their child they wish she were.

Still my tiny girlie girl who wears sundresses in winter.

No jeans or sweatpants for her.

Spent the summer down at O-wood, not quite perfect, but mostly good.

And the girls they love the ocean and the horses and the staff.

Amy ran the day camp program, had a cabin with not much room,

For the kids the end came too soon, it was far too short by half.

They miss Gabby, Dan, and Amy, Mel, and Bes and all the staff.

No more names fit without ruining the meter.

In October got a kitty, gray and white and very pretty,

Named the cat Olivia and the kids play with her all day.

Loves to play, she's quite ferocious, just nine months she's still precocious,

Has some kitty halitosis, saves us from dangerous prey,

like loose socks and cotton puffballs, keeps those shoelaces at bay.

Lifelong housemate she will stay.

Thus I end our Christmas letter, tried to make this version better.

Had some time to be creative spent three days on this and more.

Hope your Christmastime is merry, happy, healthy, also very

Restful and extraordinary time with fam'ly friends and more.

Next Christmas no complex letter, I can't take this anymore.

I'll be rhyming nevermore.

A few random thoughts since it's been a while...

Olivia is doing well.  She has adjusted to our home, and after a couple days of finding poop and vomit "gifts" around the house, we haven't had any problems like that lately.  She is eating well, and has gained some weight - she was a bit skinny when we brought her home.  She is quite ferocious, keeping the house safe from dastardly socks, flies, pencils, and jingly balls.  She enjoys sitting on the windowsill and watching birds outside.  We will be boarding her at the vet's when we visit my parents for Thanksgiving, which worries Natalie to no end.  "I'm going to miss Olivia soooo much!"

It's been snowing since about 6:30 this morning.  The forecast said we could get 2 inches.  Winter doesn't start for a month!

Natalie received her report card a couple weeks ago.  her writing would "meet the standard" for the end of second grade, and her reading is not far behind.  She is reading chapter books on her own, and when I read chapter books to her, she corrects me if I misread or skip a word.  Still wondering when we should start reading Harry Potter with her.  Probably a few years, given the heavier tone of the books beyond book two.  We'll stick with Junie B. Jones, Magic Tree House, and Big Apple Barn for now.

Annie is loving her time with "the nanny," Amy's mother, who watches her while Amy works, and is having fun at school.

I just realize this is beginning to sound like a Christmas letter.  Sorry.

In the past two weeks I have read all four books in the Twilight series for the first time.  They were adequate, I guess.  I think I liked Eclipse the best.  They were often meandering and plotless, with no direction, and then when the plot kicked in, it took hundreds of pages between discovering the problem and then dealing with it. David Eddings' last series, The Dreamers, was similar (and similarly annoying) in that way.  I can definitely understand why some girls like it so much - your heroine is a plain, average girl who has two guys who are madly in love with her.  Their only flaws are that they would both do anything possible to avoid hurting her.  Hello, wish fulfillment.  She does wait until she's married to have sex, though, so that's a good message (sorry for the spoiler, if you care.)  I'm glad I read them, so that I can discuss them with students who have read them, but the one book I bought (Twilight - I borrowed the other three from a fellow teacher, the school library, and a student, respectively) will go in my classroom library to be borrowed by students, not my home library to be read again and again, like, say, Harry Potter.

Other than that, I'm looking forward to the next two school days being over so I can visit my parents for Thanksgiving, then taking a personal day in December to go Christmas shopping.  You don't want to go anywhere near the Bangor Mall area on a weekend in December.  I don't know if it's because it's the biggest shopping area for 50 miles, or if everywhere is this bad, but I'd rather shop in Boston or South Portland than in Bangor on a weekend in December.

There's our lives for now.  Hope all the college students do well on finals.

Sorry no kitty update.  Amy put some pictures on Facebook, so I figured everyone could see them there, but i forgot some people check Facebook as often as I do (once a week or so.)

Our camera batteries died Wednesday, so we only have a few pictures so far.

She is very patient and affectionate.  She will sit on the girls' laps and doesn't mind being followed around (although she has found a good hidey-hole under the quilt rack.

She kept us up Wednesday night trying to climb on Amy's and my bed, but hasn't tried since.  She eats well and uses her litter box.

So far, I think we are all pretty happy, and Olivia has adjusted well to our home and family.

We are now officially a family of five.

Our newest family member, Olivia Princess Bickerstaff, will be joining us from the Bangor Humane Society on Wednesday after her "operation" on Tuesday.

She is a beautiful 8 month old gray and white tiger-striped cat.  We spent about a half-hour trying to pick out a kitty today, and after we picked Olivia, spent about twenty minutes playing with her in the "Visitation Room."

Olivia was wonderful with the girls - curious and afffectionate, but not aggressive like some of the younger kittens.

Unfortunately, we forgot our camera, and she wasn't at the shelter long enough to have a picture on the internet.  You can bet there will be pictures coming Wednesday night.

We finally decided this morning that getting a cat is like deciding to have kids - If you wait until you're ready, you'll never do it.

So we did it.  The girls will be counting down the minutes until I bring her home on Wednesday.

We are finally taking the plunge and going to the shelter this afternoon to pick out a kitty.

Any hints/suggestions for cat ownership, since it has been 15 years since I have had a cat, and Amy has never had one?
